Meet Our Team

F. Garrett Edwards, DVM

Dr. Edwards earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in crop, soil, and environmental sciences from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University and achieved his DVM from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He has a strong interest in equine and cattle reproduction. Dr. Edwards was born, raised and currently resides in Smithfield. When he is not assisting our clients with their large animal needs, you can find him on the family farm tending to his own cattle and horses. He spends a majority of his free time with his two children Rett and Hannah and also enjoys fishing, horseback riding, swimming, and canoeing.

 

Cathleen Lombardi DVM, CVA (IVAS), Certified in Animal Chiropractic (IVCA)

Dr. Lombardi received her Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from Cornell University and earned her DVM from Kansas State University. She completed a post DVM internship in large animal surgery at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Lombardi has been an associate veterinarian at The Oaks Equine and Farm Services since 2004.

She received training in animal chiropractic through Options for Animals and is certified in small animal and equine chiropractic through the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA). Her acupuncture training was completed through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) and she received the title of Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist for both small animal and equine.

Although she enjoys all aspects of general practice, she has special interest in equine dentistry, lameness, and internal medicine. She is also passionate about providing integrative care (acupuncture, chiropractic) to both large and small animal patients.

Dr. Lombardi loves teaching others and recently has started assisting with the new veterinary technology degree program at Tidewater Community College. She is also an instructor for The Alliance for Integrative Care, which provides continuing education for animal chiropractic professionals. She is also a teaching associate for the IVAS acupuncture course.

Dr. Lombardi is originally from New York where she grew up riding hunters and was a typical horse crazy little girl. Currently she resides in Carrollton with her husband Jay Hollingsworth. They have two rescue dogs named Sawyer and Rosie. She has a retired off the track thoroughbred named Missy.

Shanna Edwards, DVM

Dr. Shanna obtained her Bachelor of Science degree and DVM from Auburn University in Alabama. She has strong interest in equine reproduction and cattle work. Dr. Shanna was raised in Lenoir City, Tennessee and resides in Smithfield.

Dr. Shanna’s loyal daily assistant and long time employee of The Oaks Equine Josie Edwards.

 

Glorianne Vazquez-Arnal, DVM aka-Dr Glory

Dr. Glorianne Vazquez-Arnal otherwise known as Dr. Glory.

Dr. Glory is the newest addition to The Oaks team. She graduated from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2024 and has been with us for almost a year now. Dr. Glory loves variety, from cows to horses to pigs (oh my!). She is really passionate about equine dentistry, small ruminant parasite control and pot belly pig wellness.

Tanya Burggren, DVM

Dr. Tanya Burggren graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.

She grew up in Canada then moved to the Philadelphia area. She relocating to the Hampton Roads area with her husband Ryan, dogs Yara and Ember, and two horses, Jack and Gamble. Dr. Tanya has a strong interest in equine sports medicine and reproduction from growing up riding hunter jumpers and fox hunting.

Caitlin Malik, DVM

Dr. Malik is our relief vet. A relief vet comes in when a practice needs some extra hands when other doctors are gone or to give them a break when things get nutty.

She has been a huge help by coming down a few times each month covering routine and emergency calls to allow our doctors to take vacation or to attend Continuing Education.

Dr. Malik graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2018. She moved to Virginia to complete an equine internship at Blue Ridge Equine Clinic, followed by a large animal internal medicine residency at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Malik loves equine medicine, especially preventative and geriatric care! She has been a relief vet for The Oaks for almost 2 years now.

Kelly Forney

Kelly is a long time resident of Smithfield with her husband, Steve, and their cats and chickens. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her Chickens, gardening, reading, boating, camping and drag boat racing with her husband.

 
 

Joan Cook

Joan, a Smithfield native, is happily married with two grown children. She and her husband, Billy, live in Smithfield with their horses, Cookie and Porky, and 2 cats, Piggy and Simon. Joan enjoys spending time outdoors and swimming, but most of all riding her horse. She has been with the Oaks Veterinary Clinic for over 20 years.

 

Caroline Needham

Caroline Needham is a native of Virginia Beach and has been a part of The Oaks team since 2017. As a truck assistant, she is the “right hand woman” of Dr. Garrett Edwards. Caroline enjoys rehabilitating OTTBs and currently competes on her gelding, Sky’s The Limit.

 

Kelli Lawton

Kelli was born, raised and lived in California until she and her husband moved out to Virginia about 3 years ago. The draw of a first grandbaby is what brought them east! and now has 3 beautiful granddaughters.

Although her childhood was spent on horseback, she does not have horses anymore. If you stop by the office, you may get to meet her black lab, Kona, who sometimes comes in to help man the phones.

Kelli has been a great addition to our team with her always positive outlook and great attention to detail.

Besides scheduling, Kelli is responsible for making sure everything is good to go for our CVIs aka health certificates.

Janet Reinke

Janet has been with us for over 4 years and came from a background in scheduling other mobile service providers.

She is responsible for the near impossible task of getting our doctors all over Hampton Roads and northeast North Carolina in the most efficient way possible.

I know our clients always appreciate her kind and friendly voice on the other end of the phone.

Outside of work, Janet enjoys traveling with her husband to see new places and visit with her grandchildren.

Mona Teegarden

Mona has been a veterinary assistant/receptionist for over 30 years. Prior to working at The Oaks, she worked at a busy small animal emergency practice. She came to us from a busy small animal emergency practice, so nothing flusters her.

She is the person who makes sure your Coggins information is submitted to the lab correctly and handles the bulk of our prescription requests.

Mona loves camping and trail riding. She has 3 Tennessee Walking Horses. Over the years she has fostered many kittens and pitbulls. Currently she has 2 dogs and 3 cats that were foster fails.

She has 22 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren!

Morgan Squares

Originally from West Chester, PA, she now calls Smithfield home.

With a lifelong passion for riding, Morgan grew up competing in the show hunters and now enjoys fox hunting in her spare time. She recently joined The Oaks team in April 2025.

When she’s not riding, Morgan loves spending quality time with her husband, Josh, and their two dogs, Cash and Theo.

Sahmod Earls

Sahmod Earls is a Suffolk native who has a life long passion for livestock. Sahmod recently graduated with his Masters of Science in Biology May 2025 from Virginia State University where he gained his love for animal research and where he also obtained his Bachelors of Science in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine from in 2019. After earning his bachelors degree Sahmod taught Agriculture at a local high school for four years. After years of convincing students to follow their dreams he decided to pursue his own dream of becoming a large animal vet.

Sahmod works at The Oaks small animal clinic on the weekends and here in large animal throughout the week. Sahmod is a strong goat enthusiast. In his free time Sahmod loves cooking, skating, and tropical vacations.

Rachael Moran

Rachael is a Florida native who ended up moving to Virginia in 2020. Like a lot of local families, her husband’s military career brought her to the area. She's been with The Oaks for three years now, as Dr. Cathy's right hand woman.

She grew up loving animals of all shapes and sizes, but ultimately was horse crazy. In her free time, she can be found out at the barn riding her OTTB with her two dogs in tow. She's a bird nerd and makes Dr Cathy stop along clients’ driveways so she can ID birds .

Everywhere Rachael and her husband have moved to, they have given back to the community by volunteering with animal rescue groups. She has a special place in her heart for cats, and is currently fostering a kitten.

Edythe Carr

Edythe has recently transitioned from working in the office to helping in the trucks. You will see her riding with Dr. Shanna, Dr. Glory or Dr. Caitlin.

Edythe is originally from southern Isle of Wight County and is a graduate of Virginia Tech where she earned her bachelor's degree in Animal Science. With a deep-rooted interest in livestock health and production, she is pursuing a long-term goal of attending veterinary school to become a large animal practitioner.

Edythe has a particular appreciation for public health and the prevention of zoonotic diseases and is passionate about advancing animal welfare and agricultural practices. In her free time she enjoys gardening, hunting, and contributing to the daily operations of her family's farm.

Rae Butler,LVT

Rae graduated from Murray State University's Veterinary Technology program in December 2024.

She has been working at the clinic during summer and winter breaks since 2023 and is now here full time.

She has three horses, Cody, Evie and Dooley, and her dogs, Chloe and Winrey. Rae enjoys trail riding now, but used to show dressage.
